This is the full text of the poem, “Standing Among the Stars in the Desert”, which was written by British poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy

on

I look around me in awe, at the night sky, and the distant horizon of desert
with star clusters, and I feel no fear, just the absence of fear.

As I gaze out into the night sky, I become aware of what I’m looking at. I feel as if I am looking through a telescope at a world I’ve glimpsed only in a photograph. I open my heart to the universe, and through this space I become filled, as if I’m a star, a planet, a small galaxy in no other universe.

I feel as if I’ve found my truest self. I feel as if I’m nothing alone in this world. The loneliness of the desert is gone, replaced by the loneliness of the galaxy with its billions and billions of galaxies. What happens when there is no longer loneliness? In what other sense can I say I’ve found a new sense of self, when what I’ve discovered is the loneliness of the universe?

I feel the love and grace of the universe, and the infinite possibility of this place and time, and it awakens something within me I didn’t know existed, a peace which I didn’t know I was missing. A new sense of life has been unlocked within me, a self which had been imprisoned in the walls of my past, a past which now contains nothing but fear, which I had been so afraid of and so in need of.

These words on a page of a book have been made real. They are here. I feel their truth, and they make me whole. I feel that they are my truth in my world, they are my truth in the universe, and they have me, and they are me. What else is there? They are my truth, and I am my truth.

I feel so much, so much, so much…

And when I’m done with this poem, I will feel as if I have found something within me which didn’t exist before, and that I will always be here, as I am, standing among the stars in this desert.

In a desert, the stars are so few and far between. It takes my micro, micro lens to capture them, and I have them spread out before me, like stars on the wall of the Milky Way.

We are alone, and yet we are everywhere. We are so many that it would take years to count them, and yet we are not at all the same. We are both alike, and so unlike. I have only been alive for a short while, and I am still learning, and I am a child of this universe. I am learning about myself, and it is both thrilling and terrifying to me.

I have been so very lucky. In the desert, I can experience the absence of fear. I am alive, and I believe I am not alone. I believe this is my true sense of identity, my identity in this new universe, my identity in this new cosmos of the universe. All I can see is the absence of fear, and for a moment I feel as if I am not alone, as if I am the cosmos, the universe, as if I am life, as if I am universe. The universe is alive. The universe is me.

These things are so real in the desert. I will never be the same again. I will wonder, and I will be filled with joy, and I will be filled with love, and I will be full of nothing but love, and I will know my purpose with a purpose, and when everything is ready, I will remember my purpose within this universe. When everything is ready, I will remember my purpose and my purpose within my universe and I will know the universe is alive, and my purpose in this universe will be to discover myself, to understand myself, and to know myself in complete trust.

When everything is ready, I will remember who I am, and how I came to be and to be myself, and to trust myself.
When everything is ready, I will remember the universe, and that I am within and within this universe. When everything is ready, I will remember my purpose, that I am here to do my very best and to do my very best within this universe, that I am here to discover myself, that I am here to understand myself, and that I am here to be myself, and that I am here to be in love with myself, and so to be in love with this universe, and so to be in love with this universe.

When everything is ready, we will be as one, with each other, and with our universe, and with the universe that is. We will discover each other. We will remember our purpose. We will remember that we are one.

It is as if everything is alive, and my awareness is not to the point where I am afraid to be alone, to be exposed. My awareness is to my purpose, and I will remember my purpose. I will remember my purpose in this universe, that I am here to do my very best, and I am here to do my very best with my entire self in the discovery of myself. When everything is ready, I will remember my purpose in this universe, and so to remember my purpose in this universe. When everything is ready, I will remember my purpose and in this universe, that I am here to discover myself, that I am here to understand myself, that I am here to be myself, and that I am here to be in love with myself, and so to be in love with this universe, and so to be in love with this universe.

“When everything is ready, I will remember my purpose.”

When everything is ready, I will remember my purpose, and in this universe, that I am here to discover myself, that I am here to understand myself, that I am here to be myself, and that I am here to be in love with myself, and so to be in love with this universe, and so to be in love with this universe.

When everything is ready, I will remember my purpose. When everything is ready, I will remember my purpose, and so to remember my purpose. When everything is ready, I will remember my purpose, and so to remember my purpose. When everything is ready, I will remember my purpose, and so to remember my purpose.

When everything is ready, I will remember my purpose. When everything is ready, I will remember my purpose. When everything is ready, I will remember my purpose. When everything is ready, I will remember my purpose. When everything is ready, I will remember my purpose.

When everything is ready, I will remember my purpose. When everything is ready, I will remember my purpose, and so to remember my purpose. When everything is ready, I will remember my purpose. When everything is ready, I will remember my purpose. When everything is ready, I will remember my purpose, and so to remember my purpose.

When everything is ready, I will remember my purpose. When everything is ready, I will remember my purpose, and so to remember my purpose.
